Why web performance is a business metric, not a technical one

Sabina RaiFrontend Engineer6 min read

Core Web Vitals are not a developer vanity score. They map directly onto bounce rate, conversion and how much you pay for traffic.

Slow sites lose people before they see anything

Every additional second before a page becomes usable costs you visitors who never form an opinion about your product at all. On paid traffic you are buying those visitors and then losing them.

What to measure

  • Largest Contentful Paint — when the main content actually appears
  • Interaction to Next Paint — whether the page responds when tapped
  • Cumulative Layout Shift — whether things move as the page settles

Where the wins usually are

In our experience the same handful of issues account for most of the damage: unoptimised images, render-blocking third-party scripts, fonts that block text, and shipping far more JavaScript than the page needs.

Set a performance budget at the start of a build and enforce it in CI. Retrofitting performance after launch is always the more expensive path.
